Korea does not issue a standalone birth certificate — the equivalent document is the 기본증명서 (basic certificate) from the family relations registry, which records date and place of birth, family registration number, and parental information. For most foreign authorities this document must be both apostilled and accompanied by a certified translation. Process Notes
- The 상세증명서 (detailed) version includes full registration numbers and parental details required by most foreign authorities; the 일반 (standard) version is frequently insufficient
- If the apostille is also needed, MOFA processes the stamp first — the certified translation is then applied to the apostilled document
- For USCIS submissions, the translation must carry a signed translator competency statement — Seoul Apostille includes this by default
- The 기본증명서 records the date and place of birth registration, not the hospital birth date — these are usually the same, but if different, note this for the receiving authority
