Übersicht
The A-1 visa is issued to diplomats, consular officials, and foreign government representatives assigned to South Korea under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. It covers heads of diplomatic missions, diplomats, and their immediate family members. A-1 holders are generally exempt from standard immigration controls and enjoy diplomatic privileges under international law. Note: A-1 visas are processed exclusively through official diplomatic channels between governments — they cannot be applied for or booked through this platform.
Für wen ist das A-1-Visum?
Foreign diplomats, ambassadors, chargés d'affaires, consular officers, and their spouses and dependent children officially accredited to South Korea by their home government.
Berechtigungsanforderungen

Immediate family members traveling with or joining the diplomat — the dependent-family scope (shared with A-2) is itemized in the current stay manual: (1) legal spouse (if the home country recognizes multiple legal spouses, only 1 is recognized); (2) minor unmarried children living with the diplomat; (3) unmarried cohabiting children 20 or under enrolled as regular K-12 students (the manual marks this item as applying from 2022-11-01); (4) unmarried cohabiting children 26 or under in regular university-level education or research; (5) parents (of the diplomat or spouse) aged 60+ entering on condition of not engaging in income-earning activity; (6) adult unmarried cohabiting children with a disability who cannot independently support themselves

Accreditation processed through MOFA
Korea's MOFA processes the accreditation and issues the visa through official diplomatic channels — not the standard consular process.

Arrive and receive ARC (or diplomatic ID)

Visaverfahren
Auslanderregistrierungskarte (ARC)

Visaverfahren
Visaverlangerung (체류기간 연장)
No. A-1 status only covers official diplomatic duties. However, their family members may be eligible for work authorization through reciprocal agreements with certain countries. As of 2026, Korea has reciprocal employment agreements with approximately 29 countries, allowing diplomatic family members to work in Korea.
Diplomats are exempt from the standard ARC requirement and instead register through MOFA's diplomatic channel. They receive a diplomatic identification card.
Diplomats with full diplomatic immunity under the Vienna Convention are generally exempt from most immigration controls. However, the sending state is expected to notify Korea before a diplomat's arrival.
The A-1 status is tied to the official posting. When the assignment ends, the diplomat and family must depart Korea or apply for a different visa status if they wish to remain.
The dependent-family scope (shared with A-2) is listed in the current stay manual: a legal spouse (only 1 recognized even if the home country permits multiple legal spouses); minor unmarried cohabiting children; unmarried cohabiting children 20 or under enrolled as regular K-12 students (the manual marks this item as applying from 2022-11-01); unmarried cohabiting children 26 or under in regular university-level education or research; parents of the diplomat or spouse aged 60+ who enter Korea on condition of not working; and adult unmarried cohabiting children with a disability who cannot independently support themselves.
