Übersicht

The D-5 visa (취재 — press / journalism) is issued to foreign journalists and correspondents who are dispatched to or stationed in Korea for extended news-gathering and reporting activities. It is the long-stay version of the C-1 (short-term news coverage) visa — if your stay is 90 days or less, C-1 applies; if longer, D-5 is required. The D-5 holder must be affiliated with a recognised foreign media organisation (newspaper, broadcaster, magazine, or news agency) and may not perform activities unrelated to journalism (administrative staff, interpreters, drivers, and coordinators require their own appropriate visa).

Für wen ist das D-5-Visum?

Foreign journalists, correspondents, and reporters dispatched to Korea to reside and conduct reporting: those assigned from overseas media organisations with an existing Korea bureau, those with a Korean bureau newly established, and freelance correspondents under contract with a foreign media organisation operating in Korea.

Berechtigungsanforderungen

  • Affiliation with a recognised foreign news media organisation (newspaper, broadcaster, magazine, news agency with a foreign headquarters)

  • Purpose is active journalism and reporting — not administrative or production support roles

  • If reporting for a Korean media organisation, D-5 does NOT apply (a different work visa is required)

  • For existing bureau cases: the bureau must be registered with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism

Risiken für Verzögerung und Ablehnung

Was kann bei D-5 schiefgehen?

Business-investor cases are document-heavy because immigration reviews both the legal investment route and the real business activity.

Mein Risiko prüfen

Investment source or remittance trail is unclear

D-8 review can stall when the investment amount, sender, receiving company, bank trail, foreign-exchange documents, or investor identity do not line up cleanly.

Grundlage im Handbuch: The D-8 manual references investment funds, remittance/payment evidence, foreign-investment registration, and related supporting documents.

The business appears inactive or only nominal

Company registration alone is not enough. Thin operating records, no real business activity, or weak continuity evidence can invite additional review.

Grundlage im Handbuch: The stay manual includes D-8 extension and business-continuity review points for investor status management.

The business category is restricted or mismatched

Some industries or business structures are restricted or do not fit the claimed D-8 route. A filing built around the wrong route can be refused or redirected.

Grundlage im Handbuch: The D-8 sections refer to restricted industries and cases where the applicant is not considered essential management or production-technology personnel.

Startup evidence does not match the founder route

If relying on a technology startup pathway, OASIS, IP, corporate setup, and founder activity evidence must support the specific route claimed.

Grundlage im Handbuch: The manual separates investor and technology-startup founder pathways and lists different documentary expectations.

Wie man einen Antrag stellt — Schritt für Schritt

  1. 1

    Confirm bureau or sponsorship status

If your organisation has an existing registered Korea bureau, you can apply for D-5 with a 1-year single-entry visa directly at the consulate. Otherwise, your organisation must first apply for a 사증발급인정서 through the Korean immigration authorities.

  2. 2

    Prepare documents

Obtain your dispatch order or employment contract. If applying via an established bureau, prepare the bureau registration certificate. Freelancers must show their contract with the foreign media organisation.

  3. 3

    Apply at the Korean consulate

Submit the visa application with all required documents. If your organisation has no Korea bureau, include the 사증발급인정서 obtained in advance.

  4. 4

    Arrive and register

Register at the local immigration office within 90 days of arrival and obtain your ARC. Renew your status each year before expiry.

C-1 (일시취재 — temporary news coverage) is for short-term news assignments of 90 days or less. D-5 (취재) is for long-term press residency — journalists who will be stationed in Korea for more than 90 days. If you are a foreign correspondent with an ongoing post in Seoul, D-5 is the correct visa.

No. D-5 is strictly for journalists performing news-gathering and reporting. Support roles — interpreters, drivers, production coordinators, administrative staff — do not qualify for D-5 and must obtain the appropriate work visa for their own activities.

No. D-5 applies only when working for a foreign media organisation with a Korean base. If you are contracted by a Korean broadcaster, newspaper, or agency, you are not eligible for D-5 and must apply for the appropriate work visa.
