Vue d'ensemble

The D-3 visa (기술연수 — technical training) is for foreign workers who come to Korea to receive on-the-job technical training at a Korean industrial company. It is strictly tied to an existing business relationship: the trainee must be an employee of an overseas subsidiary or joint venture of the Korean company, or work for a foreign firm that has licensed Korean technology or imported Korean-made industrial plant worth the statutory minimum threshold. The D-3 is not a general skills-training visa — it is a company-to-company knowledge-transfer instrument. All D-3 visas must be sponsored through a 사증발급인정서.

Pour qui est le visa D-3 ?

Production-line workers employed by a company that is an overseas subsidiary or joint venture of a Korean industrial firm, or a foreign firm that has imported Korean technology (USD $100,000+ technology license) or industrial plant (USD $500,000+). Must be personally unable to acquire the required technical skills in their home country.

Conditions d'éligibilité

  • Employed by the overseas subsidiary/joint-venture or partner firm that qualifies the host Korean company for the D-3 programme

  • Korean host company has a qualifying relationship: overseas direct investment under 외국환거래법, technology export contract of USD $100,000+, or plant export of USD $500,000+ under 대외무역법

  • Training is necessary because the technology cannot be taught outside Korea

  • Host Korean company must be a registered industrial establishment (기술연수업체)

  • Trainee is a production-level worker, not a manager or admin

  • Korean-language ability documentation may be required

Risques de retard et de refus

Qu'est-ce qui peut mal tourner avec le D-3 ?

Business-investor cases are document-heavy because immigration reviews both the legal investment route and the real business activity.

Évaluer mon risque

Investment source or remittance trail is unclear

D-8 review can stall when the investment amount, sender, receiving company, bank trail, foreign-exchange documents, or investor identity do not line up cleanly.

Base du manuel : The D-8 manual references investment funds, remittance/payment evidence, foreign-investment registration, and related supporting documents.

The business appears inactive or only nominal

Company registration alone is not enough. Thin operating records, no real business activity, or weak continuity evidence can invite additional review.

Base du manuel : The stay manual includes D-8 extension and business-continuity review points for investor status management.

The business category is restricted or mismatched

Some industries or business structures are restricted or do not fit the claimed D-8 route. A filing built around the wrong route can be refused or redirected.

Base du manuel : The D-8 sections refer to restricted industries and cases where the applicant is not considered essential management or production-technology personnel.

Startup evidence does not match the founder route

If relying on a technology startup pathway, OASIS, IP, corporate setup, and founder activity evidence must support the specific route claimed.

Base du manuel : The manual separates investor and technology-startup founder pathways and lists different documentary expectations.

Note sur la source

  1. 1

    Korean company confirms D-3 eligibility

The Korean host company (기술연수업체) verifies that it has a qualifying investment, technology-export, or plant-export relationship with the overseas firm employing you.

  2. 2

    Korean company applies for 사증발급인정서

The host company applies to the regional immigration office for a 사증발급인정서. The application must include proof of the qualifying business relationship and of your employment at the overseas partner firm.

  3. 3

    Apply at the Korean consulate

Submit your D-3 visa application at the Korean embassy or consulate with the 사증발급인정서 and supporting documents.

  4. 4

    Undergo training and register

On arrival, register at the local immigration office within 90 days. You may only perform the training activities as specified in the invitation — no separate employment.

Visa D-3 — questions fréquemment posées

D-3 is a training visa, not a pathway to a work visa by default. However, if you develop skills that qualify you for an E-series work visa (e.g., E-7), your training experience could support a future application. Speak to an 행정사.

The number of D-3 trainees a Korean company can host is capped per a quota formula set by immigration authorities, based on the company's qualifying investment or technology-export amounts. A single company may host trainees from multiple overseas partner companies, but the total cannot exceed the company's aggregate quota.
